A Note from the Playwright
Wild Geese is set from 1980 to 1991. I meant to rewrite my one-act play, The Hairdresser and the Secretary, about two women named Denise and Janice who discover much about each other and their relationships with their mothers. But when I sat down to work on it a couple of years ago, I realized that there was much more these women were trying to tell me. Not everyone survived the sexual revolution of the 1960's. Gender discrimination remained rampant in both the workplace and at home, and yet the mythology of our culture dictated that sexual freedom translated to personal freedom. Just when it seemed things couldn't get any worse, along came computer technology. Women's roles in the workplace changed overnight. Suddenly men didn't need secretaries, they needed email. It forced many women to change direction, but go where? The destination was unknown, but we went, are still going, and we're flying in a pattern that must come from an inner intelligence. This migration is the subject of my play. Wild geese change leaders as they fly; the women of my play change leaders, too, and this mutuality is perhaps the best way - the only way - to arrive safely.
